Nyang Bing Lin
Class of 2018
I’m Bing Lin, a Junior majoring in Environmental Studies! I spent the first half of my sophomore summer trekking through the Himalayan mountains for nearly 10 hours a day! It was really such a beautiful experience being almost one with nature, and I found myself subconsciously singing ‘Colours of the Wind’ almost every day…
“You think you own whatever land you land on,
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim.
But I know every rock and tree and creature,
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name.”
This song aptly describes the local way of life, where they believe that humans and nature are connected via the circle of life, and that a deep respect for the Earth and its mountains is necessary for a community to prosper and be happy. My personal goal, in doing Environmental Studies, is to bring this sense of appreciation and respect for our natural environment to Singaporean urbanites, to help them envision a new understanding of prosperity and happiness in relation to the environment. I think we’re in an extremely exciting period of time, and I can’t wait to see what we, as individual Environmental Studies tribe leaders, have in store for the future!
